Kadean Ortiz, LPC-Associate, NCC

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, under the supervision of Andrea M. Alvarez, M.Ed., LPC-S, NCC. I work with individuals who struggle with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, bipolar disorders, mood disorders, adjustment concerns, and depression. My counseling approach is based on the client’s perspective rather than mine. I strongly believe in the power of resiliency and the ability to heal. “No matter how bleak or menacing a situation may appear, it does not entirely own us. It can’t take away our freedom to respond, our power to take action.” ―Ryder Carroll.

I trained in Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Therapy. I use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). I focus on helping clients identify and change their thinking patterns that negatively influence their behavior and emotional wellness. I use an eclectic mix of therapies depending on each client’s needs. I specialize in helping clients with their Mental Health needs, trauma, grief & loss, and relationship issues. I have found many concerns brought to therapy can result from unresolved pain or unhealthy coping strategies from the past. With my various therapeutic training, I can help clients find the best pathway for their needs.

My circumstances have birthed a passion within me to help people. As a mother of an Autistic child, I am very aware of family dynamics, children’s needs, and stages of mental disabilities. This experience helped me as a counselor to be understanding and be compassionate as I served the needs of clients and families. The diverse experiences I endured throughout my lifespan have provided opportunities that fueled my drive to help traumatized, abused, and mental illness of children and families. This experience influenced me to have a deep desire to help provide individuals with the necessary support, tools, and strategies to collaborate with them to solve their problems.

I have a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University, specializing in Trauma and Crisis. While pursuing my master’s degree, I completed my practicum/internship with Guardian House. At Guardian House, I counseled CPS clients, court-mandated clients, clients in the surrounding communities, monitored children exchanges between parents, directed parent education classes, directed shared parenting group counseling classes, and supervised visitations between parents and children. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2016. While pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I interned at Heart to Heart Hospice. During my internship experience, I counseled clients who were terminally ill. In addition, I counseled patients and families on the death and dying process. I helped patients and their families navigate life and death issues. I also served as a member of the interdisciplinary team and conducted home visits according to the bereavement plan. I enlisted in the United States Navy as a Chaplin Assistant. I served in the military from 2000 to 2013. Being in the military, I worked with individuals from every race, which helped me better understand diversity in today’s society.
